MUSICAL INSTRUCTION
After studying music for over 50 years, teaching music for over 37 years, performing, recording, and playing with bands, William has learned some very valuable lessons about music and human behavior around music. Here are some of the key lessons.
LEARNING MUSIC
*Learning music is mostly about psychology, tricking the brain, and developing the routines that will help you continually improve and make distinctions. This is the 80% that makes the difference.
*To learn at the deepest level, it's important to take an integral approach that includes psychology, structure, theory, fun/ variety, "imperfect" routines, technique, and rest/assimilation.
*Music can benefit people in many ways. Not everyone is meant to be a professional musician. Music is good for the brain. It can fuel creativity. It gives people, especially young people, something constructive to do with their time.
*"Fun" is not just about doing easy or familiar stuff, but seeing yourself continually improve, and seeing your unique musical style and art form unfold and surface for full expression.
*Muscle movements often start off as very exaggerated when first learning music, martial arts, and other physical disciplines, and become very refined and precise through intent, repetition, and focus.
*Learning music, doing new things, surrounding yourself with good people, using the opposite side of the body, and even changing your environment, all rewire the human brain and nervous system.
*Most people never learn to optimize their music studies and improve musically by using routine, environment, psychology, and the many different ways of tricking the brain.
*Our modern society doesn't put enough emphasis on the importance of music, creativity, right and left brain integration, and moving toward mastery. Still, music is beneficial for all people of all ages. It is the language of the heart. It rewires the brain, encourages creativity, and provides a constructive outlet. It can also be a powerful way to connect with like minded people.
